Summer Learning Loss: How to avoid it and have a successful 2023

Summer Learning Loss: How to avoid it and have a successful 2023 dymocks tutoring

Summer learning loss occurs when children don’t use their academic skills over the summer months. This can lead to children forgetting skills and knowledge developed at the end of the year. Whilst Australia doesn’t have the same length of breaks as, say, the United States, there is still an observable decline in basic literacy and math skills in many students when they return from the extended summer break at the end of January. What this means is that the student starts they year behind and needs to reacquire skills and knowledge – making the start of the year more stressful than it needs to be.

For parents, it can be challenging to keep their kids engaged in learning over the summer break. However, with a little bit of planning and proactivity, it is possible to prevent learning loss.

Here are our top five tips for things a parent can do to assist their child:

  1. Reading. Have your children pick out books they are interested in and set a daily reading schedule. Encourage them to read for 20 minutes each day to help strengthen their reading skills and vocabulary.
  2. Educational Apps. There are many educational apps available for tablets and smartphones that can be used to help children stay engaged and learn over the summer. Many of these apps offer interactive and fun ways for kids to learn.
  3. Libraries. Encourage your children to visit the library and check out books related to topics they are interested in. This can help them stay interested in learning and help them foster a love of reading.
  4. Learn Outdoors. Get creative and find ways to take learning outside. Have your children explore nature or visit nearby parks or museums. This will help them stay engaged and provide them with hands-on learning experiences.
  5. Games. Make learning fun by incorporating games and activities into your child’s day. Board games, puzzles, and other activities can help children stay engaged and help them learn in a fun way.

Plus, two bonus tips!

  1. Recreational activities. It’s tempting for kids to spend all their holiday time on devices. Whilst there’s a place for these (and they are not as bad as parents might think!) it’s important they are part of a balanced range of activities. Encourage children to participate in recreational activities, such as swimming, hiking, or playing sports. These activities will not only help them stay fit and healthy, and they can also provide a much-needed break from the stress of school.
  2. Schedule. Whilst kids need time and space for just ‘being’, some degree of structure and order is psychologically healthy. Especially if parents need to work over the summer, it can be a good idea for parents to create a schedule for their children. This schedule should include a balance of educational activities, recreational activities, and plenty of time for rest. A predictable routine can help children stay on track and prevent them from falling behind.

Following these tips, parents can help prevent summer learning loss and ensure their children are prepared for the upcoming school year.
