Year 3 English is a foundational requirement for success in the subject throughout your child’s education. By the end of Grade 3 children should be learning to communicate and write expressively to use language imaginatively and with the ability to read and write independently. Dymocks Term 1 Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Students learn what descriptions involve and learn how to sort and use a range of adjectives to describe an image's important features.
Lesson 2: Students learn how to use adjectives to describe people, and think about the specific effect that certain adjectives have on readers.
Lesson 3: Students learn what adverbs are, different types of adverbs, and practice using them when writing both descriptions and procedures.
Lesson 4: Students learn about how the five senses can be used in descriptions to add detail.
Lesson 5: Students learn about verbs and how specific verb choices can be used to describe events and actions.
Lesson 6: Students learn about types of nouns including proper, abstract, collective and common nouns, and practice both reading comprehension and creative writing.
Lesson 7: Students learn how to correctly use pronouns and continue to use the five senses to construct descriptions.
Lesson 8: Students learn about how to correctly use conjunctions, and continue to practice using the five senses to construct descriptions.
Lesson 9: Students complete their final assessment task for the term: describing a setting and describing a character.

Dymocks Term 2 Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Students learn the basic structure of a narrative and what the purpose of creative writing is.
Lesson 2: Students learn about the role characters play in a story. They practice both reading comprehension and writing their own descriptions of characters.
Lesson 3: Students learn about the role settings play in a story. They practice both reading comprehension and writing their own descriptions of settings.
Lesson 4: Students learn about what complications are, completing both reading comprehension and creative writing tasks. They also learn about how to use prepositions.
Lesson 5: Students learn about how to correctly use verbs, prefixes and resolutions in their own creative writing.
Lesson 6: Students learn the key concept of "show not tell" and practice adding more description and detail to their writing, while continuing to practice reading comprehension.
Lesson 7: Students learn about homophones and continue to practice both reading comprehension and "show not tell."
Lesson 8: Students learn how to generate ideas for creative writing, and continue to practice reading comprehension.
Lesson 9: Students complete their final assessment task for the term: composing a complete narrative.

Dymocks Term 3 Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Students learn what points of view are, practice reading comprehension and identifying perspectives, and learn about simple, compound and complex sentences.
Lesson 2: Students learn about how to interpret a character's feelings and motivations from a written passage, how to use techniques when presenting a speech to the class, and about the indefinite articles.
Lesson 3: Students learn about how to interpret a character's point of view, feelings and motivations, and how to correctly use different pronouns.
Lesson 4: Students learn the difference between facts and opinions, and how both are used in persuasive writing.
Lesson 5: Students learn about specific vocabulary words that can be used in persuasive writing, such as high modality language, and practice using the past, present and future tense.
Lesson 6: Students learn about language techniques that can be used in persuasive writing, such as rhetorical questions and repetition.
Lesson 7: Students learn about the structure of a persuasive introduction.
Lesson 8: Students learn how to write a structured, effective persuasive body paragraph, and how to use apostrophes correctly.
Lesson 9: Students complete their final assessment task for the term: a piece of persuasive writing.

Dymocks Term 4 Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Students learn about how stories convey ideas about both people and places. They practice answering comprehension questions by using evidence from the text.
Lesson 2: Students learn about how characters and settings are described in stories. They practice both reading comprehension as well as creative writing, describing their own characters and settings using a range of techniques.
Lesson 3: Students learn about how stories can convey different viewpoints. They practice writing about the viewpoints used in a picture book text.
Lesson 4: Students practice writing creatively from a range of different viewpoints, and using techniques to show a character's perspective.
Lesson 5: Students learn how to make connections between a text and their own experiences, and practice both reading comprehension and visual literacy.
Lesson 6: Students learn about the "key messages" that texts can send, and practice planning and composing their own creative texts.
Lesson 7: Students learn about how stories can reflect other lives and cultures, and practice more complex reading comprehension and analysis skills.
Lesson 8: Students learn about how to create an informative piece of writing, and how to reflect on the value and purpose of the stories they have read this term.
Lesson 9: Students learn how to write persuasively about their own point of view.

Students will build the foundational English skills to implement in their English NAPLAN and future education, including essay writing for the HSC.
Our opportunity classes are perfect for students with high academic potential. They will learn alongside a group of students with a similar ability to secure a coveted Selected School placement. Our year 3 opportunity classes focus on multiple choice practice and weekly tests to prepare for the opportunity class test.
Students can start their studies after successfully enrolling in year 3 English. They will review the previous week’s lesson at the start of each lesson and recap the materials at the end of the class to ensure they understand all concepts taught for their upcoming NAPLAN.
