What is Opportunity Class?
A head start that shapes your child’s entire academic journey
Opportunity Classes (OC) are specialist classes in NSW public primary schools designed for academically gifted Year 3 and 4 students. By learning alongside peers of similar ability with specialised teaching methods, OC students accelerate faster and build the academic foundation needed to compete for coveted Selective School places in Year 5.
The OC Placement Test is held once a year and is open to current Year 3 students (applying for Year 4 entry) and Year 4 students (applying for Year 5 entry). It assesses three specific areas — Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills — and places are limited. Strong preparation makes a significant difference to outcomes.
Many families start OC tutoring in Year 3 so students have time to build exam skills gradually. Starting earlier gives more time to practise, build confidence and identify specific areas for improvement.
The OC test assesses students across three distinct areas. Talent 100 offers dedicated courses for each, so your child builds deep skills in every component — not just surface familiarity.

Everything parents want to know about OC preparation and our courses.
OC tutoring prepares current Year 3 and Year 4 students for the NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test. It focuses on the three tested areas — Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills — and is designed for academically able primary students who want to earn an OC place and set themselves up for Selective School success later.
Many families start in Year 3 so students have time to build skills gradually — the OC test requires thinking skills that take consistent practice to develop, not last-minute cramming. Starting in Year 3 gives 12–18 months of structured preparation before the test, which typically occurs mid-Year 4. That said, students who start in Year 4 can still make strong progress with focused preparation across two or three terms.
We recommend all three for full test coverage — the OC Placement Test assesses all three components and each requires specific preparation. However, if your child’s benchmark results show a strong performance in one area, you may choose to prioritise the other two. Our benchmark tests help identify where your child needs the most support before you commit to a course.
Each course runs for 10 weeks per term with weekly lessons. Thinking Skills is 1 hour per lesson; English and Maths are 1.5 hours. Every lesson follows a structured format: review of the previous week, tutor-guided instruction on new material, guided practice with feedback, and a recap. Students also complete compulsory homework — printed exercises and online practice exams — and sit in-class timed exams in Week 4 and Week 8.
Our benchmark tests are designed by experienced educators who specialise in OC and Selective School preparation. They cover the same skills and question types as the real exam and are aligned to NSW NESA standards. While we cannot use the exact questions from official exams, students who perform well on our benchmarks consistently perform strongly on the real test. The tests also reflect the same time limits as the actual exam.
OC classes are available at our Hurstville, Parramatta, Burwood, Epping, Chatswood and Chatswood campuses, as well as online. Specific days and times vary by campus and course. Check our current timetable for the latest session schedule.
Advantage is our annual enrolment option that unlocks 28 extra hours of support across the year: holiday intensive sessions, additional exam prep classes, and priority tutor access between lessons. Advantage students also receive 2 extra weeks of classes per term. It’s the most comprehensive OC preparation option we offer, and ideal for students who want to maximise their chances of placement.
