Algebra in Year 7 Maths is the study of numbers and unknown values using letters and symbols. Students learn to write expressions, substitute values, identify patterns and solve simple equations.
To solve equations step by step, isolate the unknown by doing the same operation to both sides of the equation. Students usually simplify first, then use inverse operations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing to find the value.
The order of operations is the rule for solving calculations in the correct sequence. Students usually work with brackets first, then orders such as powers, then division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction.
A fraction is a way of showing equal parts of a whole or group. The top number is the numerator and shows how many parts are being counted, while the bottom number is the denominator and shows how many equal parts there are altogether.
To calculate a percentage, multiply the amount by the percentage written as a decimal or fraction. For example, 25% of 80 is 0.25 times 80, which equals 20.
