English Standard
Dymocks Tutoring Year 11 English Standard, provides practice in comprehension and communication skills to that allows you to engage with and respond to a wide variety of texts and text types that you will utilise throughout your HSC. Year 11 English Standard helps build your ability to respond and compose complex texts, with the ability to utilise language to create meaning according to required purpose, audience and context. We’ll build English skills including critical, creative and analytical skills, putting you on the path for HSC Success across a variety NSW curriculum texts. With plenty of writing practice in all question types including, short answer, long answer, creative writing, poetry and essays you’re set up well for your preliminary exams.

Lesson 1: Students learn about how to integrate description and use language techniques in their own imaginative writing. Lesson 2: Students learn about how to include a central concept in their writing, and how to respond to HSC-style stimulus questions. Lesson 3: Students learn about types of narrative voice and perspective they can use in their imaginative writing. Lesson 4: Students learn about how to write persuasively for senior English, and the three rhetorical appeals. Lesson 5: Students learn how to respond persuasively to a HSC-style stimulus, and the types of evidence they can include in a persuasive response. Lesson 6: Students learn about what discursive writing involves and practice a series of discursive writing exercises. Lesson 7: Students learn about how to respond discursively to a HSC-style stimulus. Lesson 8: Students compose a complete discursive piece and learn about what a HSC-style reflection statement involves. Lesson 9: Students complete a final assessment task for this module. Lesson 10: Further practice: review of term content, refining foundational skills and working on extension content. Lesson 1: Students learn about what Reading to Write involves and practice imaginative writing with a focus on writing descriptively, Lesson 2: Students learn about how genre affects imaginative writing, and practice evoking atmosphere in their own writing. Lesson 3: Students learn about characterisation, perspective and narration as elements of imaginative writing. Lesson 4: Students learn about how to use setting and symbolism in their own imaginative writing. Lesson 5: Students learn about types of narrative structure and the role of dialogue in imaginative writing. Lesson 6: Students learn about persuasive writing in senior English and how to use rhetorical devices. Lesson 7: Students learn about what discursive writing involves. Lesson 8: Students learn about what a 'reflection' is in senior writing, its structure and how to compose one. Lesson 9: Students complete a final assessment task for this module. Lesson 1: Students learn about what each of the rubric terms for Contemporary Possibilities involves and begin to examine a range of multimodal texts. Lesson 2: Students learn about what different "modes" are and what techniques each one may use, and practice textual analysis. Lesson 3: Students learn about how texts use multimedia features to communicate ideas and experiences, and practice analytical writing. Lesson 4: Students learn how to analyse the interactive features of a digital text. Lesson 5: Students do a close study of how multimodal text 'The Boat' constructs meaning, and practice analytical writing. Lesson 6: Students continue to examine The Boat and practice composing an extended response on a multimodal text. Lesson 7: Students learn about form and intertextuality, and begin a close study of Run Lola Run. Lesson 8: Students learn about nonlinear structure and continue to practice a close textual analysis of Run Lola Run. Lesson 9: Students complete a final assessment task for this module. Lesson 10: Further practice: review of term content, refining foundational skills and working on extension content. Lesson 1: Students practice how to conduct a close study of poetry and how to integrate context into their analysis by examining Wilfred Owen's poetry. Lesson 2: Students learn the structure of analytical writing and how to write comparatively about two texts. Lesson 3: Students learn how to compose a complete essay that integrates context through a continued close study of Wilfred Owen's poetry. Lesson 4: Students continue to practice close textual analysis and integration of context by examining Bruce Dawe's poetry. Lesson 5: Students continue to practice annotating a text, analytical writing and extended response writing. Lesson 6: Students learn how to analyse a prose fiction extract through examining elements of Jasper Jones. Lesson 7: Students practice the structure of short-answer and extended responses. At Dymocks Tutoring, our year 11 English standard tutors introduce students to the comprehensive and communicative skills required to respond to different text types in their HSC. They will implement a study plan so students can engage with the course material either in individual or group classes. Our year 11 English standard course program is separated into 4 terms:
- Term 1 Reading to Write — Students will study creative texts’ ability to convey deeper ideas and experiences and translate that into their own creative responses. They will learn narrative, imaginative, persuasive and discursive writing and how to write a reflection statement.
- Term 2 Contemporary Possibilities — We will examine how communication technologies have shaped how we decipher texts and the creative possibilities these technologies present, including nonlinear, hybrid, multimodal and interactive texts.
- Term 3 Close Study of Literature — A closer study of poetry and prose fiction texts will teach students the critical skills required to unpack traditional textual material, focusing on how to write thesis statements and essays.
- Term 4 Senior Writing Skills — In addition to practising textual analysis, students will complete various writing tasks to practice for the year 12 HSC.
