Lesson breakdown

2-Hour Integrated Learning Structure

Each Stage 1 Composite Class follows a carefully structured 2-hour format that integrates both Literacy and Numeracy learning. Our unique alternating sequence (Lit→Num one week, Num→Lit the next) ensures balanced skill development while maintaining student engagement.

The lesson structure is divided into four key segments, each designed to maximize learning retention and build confidence through progressive skill development.

Detailed Lesson Structure
1. Review and Reinforcement (20 min)

What Happens:

  • Quick quiz or warm-up activity reviewing previous week’s concepts
  • Correction and discussion of homework (if assigned)
  • Identification of common misconceptions or challenging areas
  • Connection to prior learning and real-world applications

Literacy Example (Term 1, Week 5):

Students review previous week’s sentence structure learning by identifying capital letters and full stops in sample sentences. Quick oral activity: “Find 3 things in our classroom” (noun revision) before moving to Setting & Imagery.

Numeracy Example (Term 2, Week 2):

Rapid skip counting warm-up (2s, 5s, 10s) to activate multiplication thinking. Review equal groups from Week 1 using concrete materials before introducing arrays structure.

What Happens:

  • Introduction of new concept with explicit teaching
  • Interactive demonstrations using concrete materials, visuals, or digital tools
  • Guided discovery through questioning and student participation
  • Multiple examples showing different applications of the concept
  • Think-aloud modeling by the tutor

Literacy Example (Term 3, Week 3):

Introduction to persuasive argument structure. Tutor models reading a sample persuasive text (e.g., “Why we should have longer lunch breaks”), identifying opinion statement and two supporting reasons. Students discuss: “Is this convincing? Why?” Class co-constructs criteria for strong arguments.

Numeracy Example (Term 1, Week 3):

Explicit teaching of number lines using classroom number line. Tutor demonstrates how to locate numbers: “Where does 47 go? Is it closer to 40 or 50?” Students use individual number lines to position numbers 1-100, discussing relative size and order.
Teaching Strategy:

This segment follows the I Do, We Do model. The tutor first demonstrates the concept completely, then works through examples collaboratively with the class, ensuring all students understand before moving to independent practice.

What Happens:

  • Guided Practice (15 min): Students work on structured tasks with tutor support circulating
  • Independent Practice (20 min): Students complete differentiated activities at their level
  • Peer Learning (5 min): Students share strategies or check work with partners
  • Tutor provides individualized feedback and support
  • Extension activities for students who finish early

Literacy Activities:

  • Phonics decoding worksheets
  • Sentence construction activities
  • Paragraph writing practice
  • Reading comprehension tasks
  • Grammar exercises (nouns, verbs, adjectives)

Numeracy Activities:

  • Place value partitioning tasks
  • Addition/subtraction problem solving
  • Hands-on measurement activities
  • Shape sorting and classification
  • Mental math strategy practice
Composite Example (Term 2, Week 5 - Lit→Num):

First 20 minutes (Literacy): After learning about conjunctions, students complete worksheet combining simple sentences using “and,” “but,” and “so.” Tutor circulates, asking students to read their sentences aloud to check they make sense.

Next 20 minutes (Numeracy): Students identify and classify 2D shapes using attribute cards. Working in pairs, they sort shapes by sides/vertices, then create their own shape patterns. Extension: Draw shapes with specific properties (e.g., “a shape with 4 equal sides”).

Differentiation:

Students receive tasks matched to their ability level. Developing students work with concrete materials and simpler examples. Extending students tackle complex problems and real-world applications. This ensures every child is appropriately challenged.

What Happens:

  • Whole-class review of key learning from both literacy and numeracy segments
  • Quick formative assessment (exit ticket, thumbs up/down, whiteboard responses)
  • Students share one thing they learned and one question they still have
  • Preview of next week’s learning to build anticipation
  • Homework explanation and resource distribution (optional)

Sample Recap Activities:

✓ Quick Quiz
“Show me on your whiteboard: a word with a split digraph” / “Write the number that comes after 347”

✓ Think-Pair-Share
“Tell your partner one strategy for adding numbers” / “Describe a character using adjectives”

✓ Exit Ticket
Written response before leaving: “What is one thing you learned today? What do you want to practice?”

✓ Self-Assessment

Thumbs up/middle/down: “How confident do you feel about today’s learning?”

Optional Homework:
Students receive a optional take-home worksheet that reinforces the week’s learning. Homework is designed to take 15-20 minutes and includes both literacy and numeracy components. Parents receive a guide explaining concepts and how to support at home.

Understanding the Lit→Num / Num→Lit Sequence

Week Odd (Lit→Num):

Classes start with Literacy content in the first 45 minutes (Review 20min + Explain/Explore 20min + Practice ~25min),

then transition to Numeracy for the remaining 45 minutes (Explain/Explore + Practice ~25min + Recap 10min).

Example: Week 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 start with literacy focus

Week Even (Num→Lit):

Classes start with Numeracy content in the first 45 minutes, then transition to Literacy for the remaining 45 minutes. This alternating pattern ensures neither subject consistently gets “prime time” (early class when students are freshest).

Example: Week 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 start with numeracy focus

Why This Matters:

Research shows student attention and energy are highest at the beginning of class. By alternating which subject comes first, we ensure both literacy and numeracy benefit from peak engagement times. This also creates natural “brain breaks” as students switch between different types of thinking.

Benefits

Experienced Tutors

Your child doesn't need a teacher. They need a tutor who can help them break down the subject and identify areas of improvement.

Great resources

We understand how to study smarter, not harder. That's why we condense our notes to give students only what they need to get ahead.

Small Classes

Unlike competitors, we limit classes to 12 so students get the attention they need in an interactive and engaging environment.

Individual support

Each student gets guaranteed personal attention in dedicated practice time.

Purpose-Built Campuses

Our classrooms are designed to get the job done. Equipped with fast wi-fi and digital boards, they provide everything for students to study smart and get ahead.

On demand videos

Many of our subjects have additional video support to help students understand concepts in their own time.

Track progress

Using the Dymocks App you're able to keep track of weekly scores as well as tutor feedback. Few other businesses provide the level of feedback we do.

Topic Tests

Each subject has at least one and many have more than one topic test. Written in actual exam style we ensure students are prepared for success at school.

Parent Communication

Stay informed with regular updates on your child's progress. We provide detailed feedback after each lesson so you can support their learning journey at home.

FAQ's

By the end of Stage 1, children should know how to communicate and write expressively, use language imaginatively and read and write independently. Students will build the foundational Literacy and Numeracy skills to implement in their education, including narrative writing, place value, measurement, and basic operations.

Our composite classes are perfect for students who need comprehensive support. They will learn alongside a group of students with a similar ability to secure a strong foundation for future learning. Our Stage 1 composite classes focus on building confidence and skills across both Literacy and Numeracy domains.
