Year 5 English tutoring will cover course content from the NSW Curriculum a term ahead of school to ensure your child feels confident with the subject matter. Students will focus on creative writing, including poetry, critical thinking and text analysis, and key writing foundations to build literacy skills, including initial essay writing and starting longer form content. 

Students can start their studies once they have successfully enrolled in the subject. They will complete a quiz at the start and end of the lesson to review and retain their knowledge to apply to future exams. 

There are four terms in year 5 English, including:

• Term 1: Informative Texts — Students explore their purpose, structure and language techniques that are commonly used. Students will critically evaluate what makes a text reliable and how to use these sources in their own writing. They will have opportunities to research facts to create pieces of writing that inform and instruct an audience. 
• Term 2: Meaning  —Students focus on developing reading comprehension strategies in order to gain a deeper understanding when viewing texts. This includes identifying themes and issues within texts, recognising a point of view and justifying interpretations by referring to their own knowledge, values and experiences.  Students will identify and practice asking literal, inferential and evaluative questions with a focus on visual literacy and reading comprehension
  

• Term 3: Persuasive Texts — This term, students focus on persuasive writing and giving effective presentations. They learn about types of persuasive texts, how to structure their work and support it with evidence, and how to give an effective speech. Through writing extended responses they continue to develop their vocabulary, spelling and grammar
  
• Term 4: Storytelling — Students will deconstruct what makes a good story and how the audience can relate to the characters. Students can plan, draft and edit their own work by engaging with various stories. 

Each term includes nine weekly lessons with a practice test or task to ensure students have engaged with and learned the relevant concepts for each term.
